In 1903, Eben Ezer was founded as a tuberculosis sanitarium and a deaconess mother house. Founder, Pastor Jens Madsen, chose the name "Eben Ezer" because "we, like Samuel can say, 'Hitherto the Lord has helped us'...Let us, whom the Lord has helped unite in raising Eben Ezer, that many in the years to come may be able to say, 'Eben Ezer is a stone of help through which the Lord has helped us.'"
